Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the third youngest daughter of Lithuanian-Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. At the age of five the father was a carnival barker, leaving Ruth's mother with no choice but to become a cleaner lady and waitress in order to support her family. Ruth attended school, and grew up poor in Boston Massachusetts the tenement districts. She left school after two years, to go into acting. This was not an easy path to take. While she was offered an opportunity at a theatre in New York posing as a still for a mystery magazine however, there were no theatre opportunities that was offered. Then in NYC, she worked at a bar, as an entry-point girl, before quitting and moving back to Boston. The New England Repertory Company was the first job she had as an actor who was steady. The company paid her doing shifts during the day, as an usherette. Also, she studied drama. She later graduated from the Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
